Sur, Sadhana, and Shakti

In our fast-paced world, we often use music for entertainment, a quick pick-me-up, or to set a vibe. We have playlists for every mood, concerts for excitement, and songs that become the soundtrack to our memories. Pythagoras’s words remind us that music holds a much deeper power- “The highest goal of music is to connect one’s soul to their divine nature, not to entertain.”

The legend of Miyan Tansen lighting lamps with his rendition of Raga Deepak is one of the most electrifying stories in Indian musical history. While the tale is often considered more myth than fact, it powerfully illustrates the profound belief in the spiritual and physical power of music.

Music is a cosmic harmony, with specific melodies and rhythms that cleanse and heal the human soul, providing energy and emotional uplift. Music is an active, meditative practice designed to calm the mind and open a channel to a higher consciousness. This bhaav (emotion or feeling) is considered essential for spiritual growth.

This perspective invites us to change our relationship with music. Instead of just consuming it for pleasure, what if we approached it as a sadhana (spiritual practice)? What if we sought out music not just to feel good, but to connect more deeply with our inner selves and the universal truths that unite us all?

In a world filled with chaos, Pythagoras’s wisdom is a powerful reminder: music is not just entertainment; it is a sacred path to the divine within, a way to find our oorza and uplift emotions.

Ancient practices such as kirtan, chanting, and mantra meditation resonate deeply with the concept of Sur, Sadhana, and Shakti.
Sur, the melody becomes a form of Sadhana—a spiritual practice. It is a focused, meditative engagement with sound that moves beyond mere listening. This practice, in turn, unleashes Shakti—a divine, transformative energy. When we engage with music in this way, it is no longer just sound; it becomes a tool for inner harmony, a pathway to higher consciousness, and a source of incredible personal power.

As per Indian scriptures backed by ample research, OM is said to be the primordial sound of creation, the original vibration of the universe.

‘Music is the celestial sound, and it is sound that controls the whole universe, not atomic vibrations. Sound energy, sound power, is much, much greater than any other power in the world.’
